With temperatures near or below zero degree celsius in all parts of the country, it’s time to cuddle up with a good movie. The other day, we watched “An Inconvenient Truth,” the movie that made Al Gore even more famous than when he was serving in the White House. I think my partner was one of the last three people who still hadn’t seen the film. Although it was my second time watching the film, it still had a powerful effect on me – it reminded me every little green action can, and is needed, to help the planet.
For a lot of people, Gore’s popular documentary was the first “environmental” movie that they ever watched. It brought the subject of climate change into everyday conversations. However, there is a wide selection of “green wave cinema” movies out there. “The End of Suburbia: Oil Depletion and the Collapse of the American Dream” is a particularly good one to see where our addiction to cheap oil will lead us.
Related to the topic of oil and exploring alternative transportation is the Martin Sheen-narrated “Who Killed the Electric Car?” This documentary gives us insight into why the electric car is not widely available today in the U.S. For the kids, there are movies like “Hoot” that centers around saving endangered owls and “Happy Feet,” which is about how human activity is messing up the food chain.
So cuddle up with a warm blanket, a cup of fair-trade hot cocoa, some good company, and enjoy these and other “green” cinematic offerings that will not only entertain but educate!
